Our young pony mare Daphne evidently came to us bred. We had her checked when she arrived, but evidently it was a very recent breeding and the pregnancy was not found. By the time we realized she was not really gaining weight for herself but was in foal she had been on a fescue diet and special meds had to be given to insure she would have milk for her foal. The baby boy was born at 1:30pm on Friday the 13th! He appeared reasonably healthy at birth, but was a large foal for his pony Mom to bear. He was attended by his Vet and given medications but on Sunday, March 15 was not doing well, so Mom and baby, in serious condition, were transported to the emergency department at Virginia Tech. They arrived in the wee hours of Monday morning. He was evaluated, given an I.V. and a feeding tube. Since there was no measurable maternal transfer, he was given  more antibodies.
